How To Heat an Above Ground Pool

Is there anything worse than heading out to your above ground pool and finding that the water is freezing cold? As a pool store, we’re obligated to say no! But, with so many ways to heat above ground pools, how do you know which is best for you?

Gas heaters, solar blankets, liquid solar covers, and pool heat pumps… how can you decide?

At Locey Swim & Spa, we know how challenging it can be to keep your water warm. We also know how disheartening it can be to cut swimming season short due to cold weather. Because of this, we offer a number of options for above ground pool heaters to keep your water comfortable. So, today, let’s take a look at all the options available to you.

Ways to heat above ground pools

Gas heaters

Using a natural gas or a propane heater is a great way to quickly heat your above ground pool. It lets you quickly set the temperature you desire, heat the pool to that level, and then maintain it. This way, your pool’s water is always just the way that you like it.

One of the most reliable and on-demand ways to keep your pool warm, gas heaters are also an eco-friendly choice that heat faster than electric heaters. But, even better, by using a gas pool heater, you can extend your active pool season by several months!

Solar covers

Using a solar cover, you can ‘trap’ the heat in your pool, which can raise its water temperature by up to ten degrees. Of course, how warm your pool will be depends on a lot of factors, especially whether or not your pool receives full sun.

But, even if you have a heater, we recommend using a solar blanket to keep the heat escaping. In fact, according to the Department of Energy, a pool cover can reduce your pool heating costs by 50% to 70%.

Instant cover

Another product to investigate is called ‘Instant Cover.’ Instant Cover is a liquid that you add to your pool once per week. Used in place of a solar cover, it floats on top of the water and helps to prevent evaporation.

Originating from the food industry, Instant Cover is a colorless, odorless liquid that is typically invisible unless your water is very cold. It’s a great option for busy families or people who want to dive into their pool the moment they get home from work.

For convenience, we usually recommend that pool owners use a solar cover at the beginning of and end of the season and then switch to Instant Cover during the warmer months. By doing this, you don’t have to waste time taking the physical cover on and off. As an added benefit, it also reduces the wear and tear on your cover.
