Our pool water calculator is a great way to estimate the volume of your pool. Simply select your pool’s shape, enter its details, and let us calculate how much water you’ll need to fill it.
Our calculator uses a basic volume calculation to estimate how many gallons of water your pool holds. It can be very useful when trying to calculate chemical dosing, gauge water consumption, or anticipate utility bills. Of course, we’ve tried to ensure accurate results but you should always consult an expert before adjusting your pool’s chemical levels.
One of the most common shapes for above-ground swimming pools, we calculate the volume of a round pool by first determining how many cubic feet the pool holds:
volume = (𝜋 × diameter² × depth) ÷ 4
After that, we simply convert the pool’s volume to gallons by multiplying the result by 7.48.
For an oval swimming pool, we again start by calculating how many cubic feet the pool holds:
volume = (𝜋 ÷ 4) × long diameter × short diameter × depth
After we calculate how many cubic feet of water the pool holds, we can then find the volume in gallons by multiplying the result by 7.48.
You guessed it, we’re going to start here by calculating how many cubic feet your rectangular pool holds:
volume = length × width × depth
And, once we have the final cubic foot measurement, we can calculate how many gallons of water your pool holds by multiplying the result by 7.48.
If your pool is an irregular shape, things get a little more challenging. And, while our pool volume calculator can’t account for every possibility, it’s pretty easy to adapt it to most pool shapes. To do so, you’ll want to picture your pool as a combination of more common pool sizes and shapes.
Before using our pool volume calculator, you’ll need to determine your pool’s average depth. In most cases, you can simply add the deep end depth and the shallow end depth together, then divide the result by two.
For example, if your pool’s deep end is eight feet and its shallow end is four feet, your pool’s average depth is six feet:
6 = (8 + 4) ÷ 2
It can be a little more challenging to calculate average depth if your swimming pool has multiple deep ends, a substantially shorter deep end, or an unusual ratio of shallow to deep water. But, for the most part, you can adjust the formula to account for these inconsistencies.
Adjusting your pool chemicals can be extremely complex. In fact, every year over 4,500 people go to the emergency room because of improper pool chemical balances. Because of this, it’s incredibly important to get your chemical levels right. For this reason, you should always consult with a professional before introducing new – or more – chemicals into your pool water.
Our pool calculator is only intended to provide you with an estimate of your pool volume. Since there are so many variables involved, it should not be used to calculate how much – or which types – of pool chemicals to use. If you need to know your pool volume exactly, we encourage you to consult its manufacturer’s specifications.
No matter your pool shape, it pays to get your measurements exactly right. For this reason, you should reach out to Locey Swim & Spa before you make changes to your pool’s chemical levels. Our team will work with you to determine your pool’s volume and, more importantly, we’ll guide you toward safe, useful products to keep it clean.
